I am very proud that I taught my mum how to make lasagne. If you don’t want to bother making your own cheese sauce, you can buy the ready made version. I recommend making your own cheese sauce, it only takes 10 minutes and you can control the sneaky calories by using skim milk and far reduced butter.

Ingredients

  • Olive Oil
  • 1
    brown onion, chopped
  • 1
    carrot, chopped
  • 500 Grams
    beef mince
  • 2
    garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1/3 Cup
    red wine
  • 800 Grams
    can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2
    packet of instant lasagne sheets
  • 1/2 Cup
    grated parmesan cheese
  • 60 Grams
    butter
  • 1/3 Liter
    plain flour
  • 1 Liter
    milk

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in the large frying pan. Cook onion, carrot and garlic, stirring till onion is soft. Add beef, cook , stirring until browned. Add wine, bring to the boil. Add crushed tomatoes. Cook until mixture is thick.

  2. Meanwhile make a cheese sauce. Melt butter in a heated large saucepan. Add flour, cook, stirring until mixture thickens. Remove from heat, gradually stir in milk. Cook, stirring, until mixture boils and thickens. Remove from heat, stir in cheese and nutmeg. Cool for 10 minutes.

  3. Preheat oven to 180 C. Oil ovenproof dish. Place lasagne sheets into the dish. Spread with half the meat sauce, drizzle with half cheese sauce. Repeat layering (lasagne sheets, meat sauce and finish with cheese sauce).

  4. Bake lasagne for 45 minutes or until pasta is tender and cheese is browned lightly.
